For three commoners--Elisabeth, Simon, and Hugo--a
peasant crusade offers an escape from the
hopelessness of their circumstances. In an age of
superstition and unquestioning religious fervor, they
join thousands who carelessly follow a charismatic
young leader on an ill-conceived journey to the Holy
Lands in search of fame, wealth, and redemption. But
their dreams are destroyed when Elisabeth and Simon
are sold as slaves in Africa and Hugo finds himself
adrift at sea.
