Chapter 233: Reluctant to leave her sideLucian took the cup from the tray Zane held out to him and poured the warm water from the jug for his wife before carefully handing it to her.
"Gently, love," he cautioned when she began to gulp down the water hurriedly to quench her thirst and soothe the dryness in her throat. She held out the cup for more, and he poured it for her. She drank carefully this time, all the while Lucian watched her with a tender expression on his face. She didn’t finish the water and handed him back the cup. He reached out and wiped the side of her lips with his finger and helped her lay back on the pillow before he turned to the king, who was still standing at the side of the door blocking the doctor from entering the chamber.
"You can let him in now to come and check up on her," Lucian said with his usual indifferent voice that held no emotions when he spoke to the king. His soft expression had disappeared like he wasn’t the one being gentle with the woman on the bed just now. He was still angry at the king for many reasons and the king knew it.
Though Talinor had never known how strong Lucian’s kind was, he’d seen a sample of it the day he first came out with the human girl from the dungeon. His rage had knocked many in the palace out of their breath. There was a force about him that would suffocate you to your death when he was angered, and even Talinor, who was the Alpha of the werewolves of Nazia, had been unable to withstand the suffocating air around the prince.
For the past days, the young woman had been unconscious, and the servants of the palace had lived in constant fear of coming across Lucian or being anywhere near this room. There had been no peace because wherever he walked, his presence was always overwhelming. Talinor couldn’t figure out for the life of him what Lucian saw in a fragile human, who he couldn’t even breed an heir with, even if he kept her.
He’d stood at the door since, watching quietly as he saw the two basking in each other’s embrace until the prince ordered for water, and now he spoke to him with a tone of authority to let the doctor in. It was almost like he was the king while Talinor was his servant.
Talinor moved for the doctor to walk in and turned to leave, but before he left the room, he said to Lucian, "When you’re done being a wife magnet to her, we have important things to discuss. We have put things away for too long; it’s time we get on and finish up." Saying this, he looked towards Ave with darkned eyes briefly and left the room without a word to her.
Lucian didn’t bother to follow the king because he wasn’t finished taking care of his wife. Ave, noticing the way the king had looked at her before he left—like she was an unwanted pest in their palace—felt a twinge of worry. Had something happened while she was unconscious? Or was it because she now knew the secret of their land? She remembered the king didn’t like her before, believing that whatever she did was merely an act he would eventually expose. He didn’t trust her. Now that she knew their secrets, he was most likely even less pleased.
Anxiously, she glanced at Lucian, who sat on the edge of the bed with no intention of following the king, and frowned.
"He doesn’t look pleased about something. I don’t think you should keep him waiting. He said you have many things to discuss, perhaps it’s about you taking back the throne," Ave said softly as she looked at him from where she lay. She knew Lucian must have been worried sick about her condition and that she had been unconscious for days now. She wouldn’t want to be the reason he would lose the support he needed from the Nazia. She had many things to talk to him about, most importantly why he hadn’t told her about his curse, but she knew that could wait when he settled things with the people here.
"I will see him later after you are well treated and in a better condition," he assured her gently as he reached out to pat her head. Noticing she was about to urge him to go and meet the king and leave her, something he would never do when she’d just woken up after being unconscious for five days, he turned to the doctor who was standing at the side of the bed and ordered him to do his work of checking on her health, while causing Ave to momentarily forget she was about to urge him away.
"Y-yes, Your Highness," the young doctor said with a slightly trembling voice as he moved to the bedside with his box of equipment and medicine. He couldn’t help but feel intimidated by the prince’s presence after all the rumors he’d heard about how he’d killed doctors that were known to be skilled out of his rage.
The young doctor was just an omega, who had learned about medicine because omegas were known to be weak and almost humanlike. However, they were stronger than humans but not as strong as the normal werewolves. With the prince sitting at the edge of the bed of the human he was supposed to treat and glaring at him to do his work, the doctor could barely pull out what he needed from his box as Lucian’s presence was far stronger than that of their Alpha. Just who was this man? Why did he have such a strong presence about him that would make their kind feel this much intimidated?
Lucian turned to scowl at the trembling doctor who couldn’t seem to find whatever he was
Those words assured him of what he wanted to hear. Before he left, he moved forward, leaned down, and kissed the side of her mouth before whispering, "I’ll be right back. Don’t let them stress you too much. You can send them away if they disturb your rest," he told her, referring to his siblings. The last thing he wanted was for them to not allow her to get some rest.
Ave nodded, and when he still didn’t pull back from her and kept pecking her lips a few more times, she raised her hands and slightly pushed at his chest to urge him away before he’d decide to kiss her lips open-mouthed when she hadn’t freshened up yet. It was part of why she wanted him to go and do something while she cleaned up. It took a few more pushes before he reluctantly straightened up and left the room after warning the twins not to stress her.
