Chapter 180: The Mother He Refused to Face
Chapter 180: The Mother He Refused to Face
The moment the door closed, Mark reached out and took his arm, his grip firm and anxious. "Please, come with me."
Matteo’s eyes narrowed as he followed his twin’s hurried steps. "Is everything okay?"
"Don’t question me yet," Mark said, not slowing his pace. "Just follow me."
Matteo said nothing more, silently following Mark down the grand staircase.
When they reached the main living room, Matteo was surprised to find Merissa and Maxwell already seated there.
He exchanged a glance with Mark before the two of them walked over and took their seats. Matteo’s eyes moved between his siblings, taking in their expressions.
True to his nature, Matteo didn’t demand to know why they were in his house unannounced; instead, he turned his sharp gaze back to Mark and asked, "What is going on?"
Maxwell shifted in his seat and spoke up. "I will speak first."
Mark nodded. "Go ahead."
Matteo turned his full attention to Maxwell, his expression neutral as he waited to hear what was so incredibly urgent.
"I’ll go straight to the point," Maxwell said, taking a deep breath. "The thing is... we want you to visit Mother."
Matteo’s face changed instantly, his features hardening into stone.
Sensing the immediate shift in the room, Mark quickly stepped in. "Teo, listen. We’ve been thinking about this. For how long do you want to keep this distance from Mother? If she doesn’t want to talk to you on the phone or see you, why not just go to her instead? We want you to meet with her before she—"
Matteo didn’t let him finish the sentence.
He abruptly stood up, his towering frame casting a shadow over the room as he turned to his twin. "You called me out of my room for this?"
Merissa sat forward, her voice pleading. "Listen, brother. Just hear us out first."
"Quiet," Matteo told her coldly. He looked back at Mark, his jaw clenched tight. "She doesn’t want to see me, and I don’t want to see her either."
With that, Matteo turned on his heel to leave the room.
"Since you won’t listen to us, I will talk about this with Adrian," Mark called out after him. "Maybe he can be the one to get through to you."
Matteo turned around immediately, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, lethal anger. He stepped back into the living room, his voice dropping into a deadly hiss. "You dare not do that, Mark. Leave Adrian out of this."
Mark stood tall, refusing to back down as he met his twin’s furious gaze. "Take one more step and see what I can do. What the hell is wrong with you, Teo? She’s your mother—"
"She abandoned me!" Matteo roared, the raw pain finally breaking through his composure. "She made it completely clear that she doesn’t want to see me, and she disowned me! She told me herself that she is not my mother. Don’t you get it, Mark? I am not like you. I don’t have the perfect life that you have, and there is absolutely no way she will ever want me."
"I don’t have a perfect life," Mark corrected him sharply, his voice cracking with emotion. "Because without you, I am nothing, Teo. I have spent my whole life feeling guilty for being weak. Maybe back then, if I had just fought back... if I hadn’t been so weak and fallen down those stairs, maybe things would be different."
Seeing the familiar shadows cross Mark’s face, Matteo froze. Mark had always blamed himself for everything that went wrong in the past, and Matteo absolutely hated seeing his brother carry that crushing weight. The anger in his chest instantly dissipated, replaced by a heavy defeat.
Matteo let out a long breath and held up a hand. "Enough," he said softly, cutting off his brother’s spiraling thoughts. He walked back toward the sofa and sat down, looking directly at Mark. "What do you need me to do?"
Relieved that he was finally listening, the siblings began to speak one after another, laying out their plans for the visit in careful detail. Matteo sat in silence, listening closely to everything they had to say. Once they finished, he gave a firm nod.
"I’ll do it," Matteo said quietly. "Exactly what you all said."
With the conversation officially over, Matteo left his siblings in the living room. He headed back upstairs, walking down the long corridor to return to the bedroom where Adrian was waiting.
As he stepped into the room, his phone buzzed with a new message from Tony.
Matteo pulled it out and glanced at the screen. According to the update, Iris’s father was already cracking under the pressure and was willing to meet whenever Matteo decided on the meeting point.
Completely unfazed, Matteo typed out a brief reply.
Tell him I’m busy right now. When I have time, I’ll let him know. Then I’ll decide where he can meet me.
After sending the message, Matteo slipped his phone back into his pocket.
A second later, Tony’s reply came through.
Copy that.
The moment Matteo locked his phone, Adrian ran over to him, throwing his arms around his neck and eagerly climbing up his body. Matteo caught him effortlessly, his hands anchoring underneath Adrian’s thighs as he carried him over toward the sofa.
Sensing a lingering tension, Adrian looked closely at Matteo’s face and asked softly, "Is everything okay, babe?"
Matteo’s expression softened instantly. "Yes, baby," he answered, as he carefully descended onto the cushions, keeping Adrian securely in his lap.
Adrian adjusted his position, sitting comfortably across Matteo’s legs. He smiled sweetly, his fingers reaching up to playfully trace Matteo’s jaw, lips, and nose, trying to cheer him up. "Don’t be mad, baby," he murmured, messing with every part of Matteo’s face.
Matteo just watched him, the heavy stress of the family meeting completely melting away as a genuine smile broke across his face.
"I love you, my baby," Adrian whispered, leaning in close.
Matteo wrapped his arms around him, holding him tightly against his chest. "I love you so much, Rian."
By evening, Matteo’s elite security team arrived at the airport to pick up Kevin.
When the blacked-out car pulled up to the massive iron gates of the estate, Kevin’s eyes widened. The mansion stretched across the property like something out of a movie, while heavily armed guards stood watch at every corner.
Kevin knew Matteo was powerful, but he had never expected this. The sheer scale of the estate, the security, and the wealth on display were far beyond anything he had imagined.
One of Matteo’s bodyguards immediately went to inform him of Kevin’s arrival. Not long after receiving the news, Matteo made his way downstairs.
By the time he reached the main living room, Kevin was standing in the middle of the mansion, his gaze roaming across the luxurious interior in open amazement.
Matteo walked toward him with a faint smile.
"Hey, Kevin."
Kevin turned at the sound of his voice, then glanced around once more before letting out a low whistle.
"You seriously never told me you were this powerful back home, Matteo," he said, shaking his head in disbelief.
Matteo let out a low chuckle, stepping forward to shake his hand. "Stop it, Kevin. How was your trip?"
"The journey was entirely worth it," Kevin smiled, stretching his shoulders.
As they laughed together, Mark happened to walk downstairs and into the foyer.
The moment Kevin’s eyes landed on him, he froze. His gaze snapped back and forth between Mark and Matteo, his jaw nearly hitting the floor.
"Bro..." Kevin gasped, completely stunned. "You are full of surprises. I really know absolutely nothing about you." He pointed between the two men. "So you’re a twin?"
Matteo chuckled at his reaction.
"Yeah," he replied. "This is my other half, Mark. He’s my twin brother."
Mark walked over and offered Kevin a polite greeting.
"Nice to meet you."
"You too," Kevin replied, still looking slightly shocked.
After exchanging a few words, Mark excused himself and continued on his way, leaving Kevin staring after him in disbelief.
"Damn," Kevin muttered, shaking his head. "I genuinely thought I was seeing double for a second."
Once the introductions were out of the way, Matteo glanced at one of the maids standing nearby. "Show Kevin to his room," he said. "He should get settled in, unpack, and freshen up before dinner."
Once Kevin followed the maid, Matteo went back to the bedroom to check on his partner. Adrian looked up as the door opened. "How is your friend?"
"He’s fine," Matteo replied, walking over to kiss his forehead.
Adrian smiled. "Good. I’ll see him downstairs during dinner."
After a while, the clock struck dinner time. Matteo turned to Adrian, offering his hand. "Come on, let’s go downstairs and eat."
Adrian shook his head softly, giving him a gentle push. "You go on down first, babe. I need a few more minutes. I’ll come down right after you."
"Alright," Matteo said, before stepping out of the room and heading down to the grand dining wing.
When Matteo entered the dining room...
