Chapter 60: The Earth Dragon Tribe
Chapter 60: The Earth Dragon Tribe
The Earth Dragon Tribe's camp was hidden between two rocky mountains.
The mountain is not high, but it is steep. The exposed rock face gleams with a cold, iron-gray light under the midday sun, and the scattered rocks on both sides are captivating.
A narrow opening, barely wide enough for three carts to pass side by side, is split between the two mountains. The rock walls on both sides are steep and vertical, and this is the only passage into the canyon.
It is also a natural habitat for growing ground potatoes.
Ron stood outside the narrow opening and glanced inside.
The canyon suddenly opens up into a basin surrounded by mountains, as flat as a dried-up lakebed.
Scattered throughout the basin are hundreds of tents and several rows of low houses built of rubble. In the distance, near the foot of the mountain, there is a natural spring where water gathers into a shallow pool in a stone trough.
Surrounded by mountains on all sides, this is the only exit.
"No wonder the Earth Dragon Tribe has amassed such a fortune." Ron withdrew his gaze. "As long as we guard the narrow entrance, outsiders can't get in."
Fanta stood beside him, mentally rehearsing the attack and defense. He shook his head: "If we launch a direct assault, at most five people can walk side by side in the narrow passage; one in, one dead."
"Then we won't launch a direct attack," Ron said.
Ron had planned ahead, having his men set up the catapults in a spacious area and then begin calibration.
Their actions naturally could not be kept secret from the Earth Dragon Tribe, who had been keeping an eye on the movements at the mouth of the canyon.
Unfortunately, they had never seen a catapult before, but its imposing size still made the Earth Dragon Tribe immediately nervous.
The goblin hero left behind by the Earth Dragon tribe is the previous chieftain, Benbo Hammer.
Benbochui stood on the village wall, his gray-green skin already loose and drooping. His left arm, from the elbow down, was just a broken stump, cut off when he was young during a land dispute with another tribe.
He had lived most of his life and had seen human caravans, human prisoners, and human defeated soldiers, but he had never seen humans take the initiative to attack him. Looking at the huge catapult at the mouth of the canyon, his face was more solemn than ever before.
It is an indisputable fact that humans are generally more capable than goblins, and their weapons and equipment are also formidable.
Just as Benbo Hammer finished speaking, he said, "This might be a new siege weapon for humanity. Be careful, everyone. When the siege weapon gets close, fire rockets to burn it."
A loud bang echoed through the canyon, creating a huge reverberation.
"What is that sound?"
Just as Benbo Hammer finished speaking, he saw the elite goblin next to him pointing to the sky.
"Old chieftain, the stone..."
When Benbo Hammer saw the huge rock flying in the sky, his first thought was that the Earth Dragon Tribe was too late.
Four round stones flew over the village wall and landed inside the village. The powerful impact, combined with their round shape, caused them to tumble for more than a hundred meters within the village.
Four bloody passages were plowed out.
"This is a new weapon for mankind."
The entire Earth Dragon tribe was terrified by this sudden attack and remained silent for a full minute.
They only realized what was happening when the second wave of catapult attacks came flying in.
This time, the boulder flew towards the fortress, bounced on the ground, and smashed a large section of the fortress wall.
The soldiers on the stockade wall felt as if an earthquake had struck. By the time they realized what was happening, a third of their proud city wall had already collapsed.
Fortunately, the area where they were standing did not collapse, but looking at the collapsed city wall less than ten meters away, Benbo Hammer felt terrified.
Even the Goblin King couldn't stop this attack!
"What are you all standing around for? Charge out and destroy the human siege engines, or the Horde is finished!" Rampage Hammer shouted.
The goblin elites around him quickly recovered, roared, jumped off the stockade wall, and began to gather their forces, rushing out of the canyon.
The goblin elite stood at the back of the group, driving the smaller goblins forward.
Dozens of goblin archers crouched behind the stockade wall, shooting arrows toward the pass, but most of the arrows were blocked by the knights' shields, and the few that did hit the gaps could not penetrate the plate armor.
A goblin elite attempted to climb out from the side of the rock wall, but was pinned to the rock wall by an arrow from a knight behind him halfway up.
Looking at the swarming goblins, which had no formation whatsoever, Ron gave a cold smile.
"Use shrapnel!"
"yes!"
The narrow canyon mouth is not only the best terrain to block the enemy's attack, but also a nightmare for those inside who want to break out.
Fanta personally led the Knights Guard to block the way. Fanta and Hilden took the lead and did not block the pass, but left space for the Knights Guard to spread out. In this way, there were at most seven or eight goblins rushing over, but they had to face heavily armed knights.
Fanta and the others were too lazy to move, they just raised their shields to defend themselves, and they didn't even bother to swing their swords.
The militiamen standing behind them, holding long spears, kept thrusting them out through the gaps in the shields.
Soon the pass was blocked by goblin corpses.
But the falling rocks did not stop. After killing goblins with slingshots at the beginning, they began to hurl boulders at the tribe's interior.
This time, Ron didn't consider the people captured inside. If they were really crushed to death, it would just be their bad luck. His main attack area was the stone houses.
Seeing the tribe being destroyed by boulders and feeling helpless, Benbo Hammer gritted his teeth and personally led the goblin elites in an attempt to break out.
As expected, their weapons couldn't penetrate the armor's defenses at all, and without armor, they had absolutely no way to effectively defend themselves against the sharp steel spearheads.
As Benbo Hammer was pierced through the body by several spears, he looked at the tall knight in front of him with despair. He saw the knight's indifferent eyes staring at him through the gaps in the helmet. The knight did not swing his sword from beginning to end. His eyes were filled with nothing but indifference and contempt.
"Have humans become this powerful?"
After the Rampage Hammer fell, the remaining goblins went even crazier, rushing forward to their deaths one after another. When the last goblin fell, Fanta waved his hand, causing the ranks to disperse and begin clearing the corpses from the pass.
Ron looked at the pass in front of him, lost in thought.
"This pass is too narrow; catapults can't be placed in, and the army can't deploy." He then looked at the rock walls on both sides of the canyon. "Wide the pass, then build arrow towers on the rock walls on both sides, and three walls span the canyon. Place the catapults behind the walls, and we won't be afraid of anyone who comes."
Fanta was taken aback: "Young Master, are you going to turn the canyon into a fortress?"
“It’s not just a fortress,” Ron said. “It’s a granary.”
Ron wanted to build three lines of defense in this canyon. With catapults, they needed a wide space to set up the catapults and other weapons and buildings. This narrow area was not suitable for large-scale troop deployment and material transportation.
After all, he would never give up such a natural canyon; it would become the territory's grain production base.
Along the way, the canyon's height was never less than 30 meters, and in many areas it was as high as 50 meters. I don't know the situation inside the tribe, but the outer perimeter alone can be planted with hundreds of acres of rock potatoes, so there must be many more inside the canyon.
The Earth Dragon Tribe was able to occupy this territory because of the easily defensible terrain of the canyon pass. Many goblin tribes probably coveted it for a long time, but unfortunately, they couldn't break through it, and in the end, it benefited Ron.
Hilden flicked the blood off his shield, looked at the corpse of the stalker on the ground, and said in a low voice, "Among those who besieged Wenger Territory were members of the Earth Dragon Tribe. I defended it for seven days and seven nights, and more than two hundred of my brothers died."
He kicked the broken spear on the ground, his voice carrying a simmering ferocity: "A bunch of uncivilized bastards."
