Chapter 29 The Moment of Awakening
Chapter 29 The Moment of Awakening
Laurie felt that the bed in the guest room at Godotkin College was quite soft; after her tumultuous journey to New York, she hadn't had a good night's sleep.
These past two days, she's been introduced to be some kind of superhero in a daze. Her mind is still a bit foggy, but that doesn't stop her from falling asleep the moment her head hits the pillow.
In her dream, she manipulated Joey, who had no superpowers, countless times. The small-town boy, who was always lost in thought in his seat, was completely at her mercy, utterly powerless in the face of her love.
This unrealistic dream didn't last long before she was awakened by cries coming from next door.
As mentioned earlier, a memorial service is being held at the G-Men's manor today. The vast majority of G-Men members have left their bases and rushed to the manor, including G-Men and several other subgroups such as 'G Special Forces', 'G Style', 'G Britain', 'G Prodigy', 'G Coast', and 'G Factor'.
They came simply to mourn the two members they had lost recently.
This is the meaning of the big family that G-Men represents.
"If you ask me, that bitch's death was truly a cause for celebration."
The speaker was the core member of the G-Men, the Fifth Soldier, who was still wearing his signature helmet with goggles, supposedly to help control the power of his laser eyes, and was now completely drunk.
Beside him stood Stack, a member of the G-Force, a two-meter-tall metal giant whose effects from alcohol were clearly minimal: "Which bitch are you talking about?"
"Of course it's the Silver Woman, that suicidal bitch Kincaid!"
The Fifth Warrior gritted his teeth with hatred when he mentioned his former teammate, the Silver Maiden Kincaid. This telekinetic bitch was arrogant and, relying on Professor G's favor, never took him, the captain, or anyone else seriously.
Her death is a great relief to everyone:
"We even erected a three-meter-tall bronze statue of this slut, what a fucking waste of money!"
When the topic turned to the Silver Maiden Kincaid, the Fifth Warrior suddenly remembered that he had just heard Curly Hair say that the Silver Maiden's successor had arrived at the manor and was currently in a guest room on the other side of the manor.
Under the influence of alcohol, he suddenly felt a surge of lust and decided to take the stack of goods to find some fun over there.
"Come with me, we can arrange her welcome ceremony in advance, can't we?"
Stack clearly knew what the so-called "welcome ceremony" meant, but he didn't want to join in the drunken antics of the Fifth Warrior, so he gently grabbed the latter by the back of his leather jacket collar:
"Didn't you hear what Professor G just said?"
The fifth warrior, unfazed, continued walking straight ahead: "Which line? The one that says, 'The Silver Woman will live forever in our hearts'?"
"No." Stack showed no intention of loosening his grip on the Fifth Soldier's collar. Like most G-Men members besides the Fifth Soldier, he respected Professor G and supported all the decisions the professor made.
"I'm referring to the part after the banquet—the part about 'These are turbulent times, don't cause trouble, lest Walter finds another excuse to use against you.'"
"You fucking let go of me!"
The fifth warrior turned around and swung his arm, forcing Stack to release himself. He wasn't drunk; he just wanted to vent his anger on something.
"I won't cause trouble for that girl. Superhumans are difficult to deal with, and besides, a normal person came along with her, didn't she?"
Stack did not object again upon hearing this—in their eyes, apart from Professor G, ordinary people were indeed insignificant.
So the fifth warrior went to Laurie's room next door, easily melted the door lock, and tiptoed into the bedroom.
The fifth warrior yanked off the blankets on the bed, revealing her nearly naked, petite body.
The Fifth Warrior grabbed Ashley's hands as if she were a chick, using superhuman strength to easily lift her up and slam her against the wall. With his other hand, he quickly removed the few remaining pieces of clothing from her.
"What are you trying to do?! I'm from the HR department at Walter...."
The Fifth Warrior slapped Ashley across the face, nearly knocking her unconscious: "I'll do it, you bitch, you filthy bitch!"
These Vought International lackeys, used to bossing around the superheroes who belong to Vought, always forget an obvious fact.
That is, superhumans like the Fifth Warrior are essentially a more advanced race than ordinary people, and can easily hold the power of life and death over ordinary people.
The Fifth Warrior is now ready to make this Walter agent, Ashley, realize this again.
He didn't even bother to cover the other person's mouth. This was G-Men's territory, and as the leader of G-Men, he could do whatever he wanted!
"Get your dirty hands off her!"
Laurie heard Ashley's pleas and screams coming from the next room, and at that moment she remembered Ashley's earlier instructions to her.
To hell with the instructions—without a second to spare, Laurie threw them to the back of her mind, quickly dressed, and rushed next door, only to find a strange man in a helmet committing lewd acts against Ashley.
Without any hesitation, Laurie activated her ability, and with a thought, she lifted the bedside table and smashed it down on the beast's head.
Thump! The solid wood furniture was quite heavy, and with the acceleration of that instant, it knocked the Fifth Warrior to the ground. In the blink of an eye, the bed where Ashley was flew toward Laurie, the sheet rolled up and wrapped around her exposed body.
"How are you?"
"You shouldn't have come!!"
Ashley, who was helped up from the bed by Laurie, didn't even bother to wipe away the tears that welled up on her face from the pain, but she knew that Laurie's presence would only make things develop in a more uncontrollable direction.
Throughout her career, she had dealt with the messes committed by many superhumans, but she never imagined that one day such a mess would happen to her, and based on her experience, Walter would never stand up for her.
"Where do you think you're going!"
The fifth warrior regained consciousness and, before he could even get up from the ground, saw the two men preparing to flee.
Without the slightest hesitation, the fifth warrior activated his helmet, unleashing his laser eyes at full power and scanning the area.
Laurie was clearly caught off guard by this move. Before she could react, the laser beam struck her back. The massive energy surge instantly burned off her long golden hair, burned through her clothes, and left a bloody wound on her left shoulder.
Laurie cried out in pain, but before she could check her injury, she felt her left hand, which was supporting Ashley, suddenly go light. Turning her head, she saw a scene she would never forget:
The laser beam didn't just hit her; it also swept across Ashley's body.
The blow ignited the sheets covering Ashley, and Ashley herself was also ignited. The immense power severed Ashley diagonally from her abdomen to her lungs.
"No, no, no!!!"
This situation was far beyond what Laurie, a small-town girl, could bear. She held Ashley and screamed in terror as the massive shockwave leveled the surrounding area.
"Laure...run...faster..."
Ashley, nestled in her arms, still retained a sliver of consciousness, but life was rapidly fading from her eyes. It was a miracle she could even speak; all she wanted was to find a way to help Laurie, this brave girl, escape this perilous situation.
"Can you... lift something...? Try... lifting yourself..."
Laurie looked at Ashley, who was now lifeless in her arms, and for the first time in her life, she began to try to properly control her superpowers to support herself and Ashley.
She succeeded.
