Chapter 131 Chain Missions
Outside the village, there stands only a simple tombstone.
The three stood silently for a moment, then turned and left, heading towards Twin Harbor.
The journey proceeded smoothly without incident, and the three traveled at a leisurely pace. Along the way, Kane observed that life within the territory of Sussas was peaceful and harmonious.
Along the way, wisps of smoke rise from village chimneys, half-elf shepherds tend their flocks of sheep, and charming low houses stand by the roadside.
The closer you get to Twin Harbor, the more bustling and dense the buildings become, and the more pedestrians there are. You can also see passersby casting friendly glances your way.
As dusk fell and the three were about to reach Twin Harbor, they saw only a few indifferent sheriffs at the junction of the roads leading to the city gate. Kane frowned slightly, observed for a moment, and then nodded to himself.
"What's wrong?" Risa looked at Kane in confusion, while the skinny mercenary instantly became alert.
He knew that his boss knew a lot of information that he didn't.
Kane said calmly, "It's alright, we're safe."
He looked at the two men, his gaze especially falling on the skinny mercenary: "This time, we'll leave and wipe out the Bloodline Purification Society, and the reason will be the one you made up before—you should understand the rest."
The skinny mercenary nodded.
Kane patted him on the shoulder, and the three of them then entered Twin Harbor. Kane's drowsy appearance beneath his mask naturally caught the sheriff's attention. The two whispered a few words, collected three silver coins as an entrance fee, and then waved for them to enter the city.
Upon entering the city and approaching the river, the three found a small boat and boarded it. Before long, they arrived at the Dark Brotherhood's tavern.
The tavern was still bustling with noise, many people drinking from wooden cups, and waitresses bustling about serving drinks. But when Kane and his companions pushed open the door and entered, the entire place froze instantly.
Someone stood up and looked at the thin mercenary behind Kane, tentatively asking, "Where are they?"
The skinny mercenary shook his head.
The tavern fell silent instantly, the atmosphere suddenly becoming heavy as everyone crowded around, many asking questions.
The skinny mercenary glanced at Kane discreetly, then began to explain according to the pre-arranged script.
Kane nodded slightly. After all, quite a few mercenaries had been lost, and if word got out, it would inevitably cause a stir. He looked at Risa: "Let's go, I'll find you a place to stay first—and then I'll change your body later."
Risa gave a snort of annoyance, but Kane ignored her and led her through the crowd toward the inside of the tavern.
Just then, Sophia came out of the basement because of the noise outside. She looked up at Kane and bowed respectfully.
"Your Mightiness."
Kane nodded: "The Bloodline Purification Society's mission is complete. Also, please tell Lady Ella that I've completed the task she assigned me—but—"
After hearing Kane's report on the mission details, Sophia's face showed a look of surprise and uncertainty.
The Dark Brotherhood has not been without heavy losses; the casualty rate in ordinary missions is roughly 30%.
With Kane, a second-tier powerhouse, involved, the survival rate was still less than 30%, which is truly rare.
If Kane hadn't brought back the skinny mercenary as a witness, and if she hadn't always trusted Kane's character, she might have even suspected that Kane had led everyone to the altar to perform a bloody sacrificial ritual.
Kane said, "You don't need to give me my share of the commission. Consider it as payment for the families of the mercenaries who died in battle."
For him, this amount of money was insignificant, but if his reputation was ruined, it would be much more troublesome to recruit mercenaries in the future.
Sofia breathed a sigh of relief, her expression softening considerably. This arrangement would make it easier for her to handle the follow-up matters.
Kane gave a few more instructions, then booked two guest rooms and took Risa upstairs.
The two first entered one of the rooms and stopped at Risa's residence.
Risa suddenly laughed, lazily sitting on the bed, crossing her legs, and deliberately asking seductively with a half-smile, "What do you plan to do to this body?"
As soon as she finished speaking, a voice of dissatisfaction rose in her heart.
Kane glanced at her: "Do you want your pay docked?"
Deducting wages?
Upon hearing this, Risa froze on the spot, and the atmosphere became extremely awkward.
Kane smiled slightly: "The journey is inconvenient, so let me ask you a question now—why is the Demon Cult hunting you down? Is it merely to refine you into a possession potion?"
Risa frowned at him. "You know more than I thought."
She hesitated for a moment, realizing that she could only depend on this temporary employer, and finally spoke. Kane's expression gradually became serious.
According to Risa, her original form, the first demon child, was a commoner woman from Susas.
She was summoned to a village outpost in the wilderness. Another demon summoned with her went berserk on the spot, slaughtering several cultists before being killed and dismembered on the spot.
Although she did not display her abilities, she was still viewed with suspicion by the cultists, who seemed to intend to take her to some headquarters.
In an unexpected turn of events, she met Theresa and, through a dream, transferred her own consciousness into her current body.
"Transferring through dreams?" Kane frowned at her. "If you possess this ability, why don't you continue transferring?"
Risa sneered: "This kind of transfer would cause great damage to my main consciousness. Otherwise, why do you think I sell hallucinogenic water in Twin Harbor? It's to select suitable targets and absorb their souls and limbs."
Seeing Kane's displeasure, she quickly explained, "I know what you're thinking, but my dream perception can distinguish between the good and evil of the dream's inhabitant. Following Theresa's wishes, I mostly target wicked people: merchants who cheat customers with inferior goods, employers who exploit the working class, and men who cheat and betray—"
Of course, they were all just small fry.
"As for the others, I merely collected a few soul fragments and bestowed upon them a beautiful dream. As for that previous statement about killing all those important to you, you didn't actually mean it, did you? If you did, I apologize—"
Kane looked at Risa, completely ignoring her apology.
These abyssal demons are inherently chaotic, and even if they are weak now, they may well keep their promises once they grow stronger.
However, since the other party has made a vow to the Styx River, he doesn't need to worry too much.
The most important thing right now is to solve the immediate problem.
He tapped his fingertips lightly on the table, pondered for a moment, then looked at Risa and asked, "Would it be feasible if I had you use dreams to gather intelligence on others?"
"Intelligence? What do you want to investigate?" Risa frowned.
Kane said in a deep voice, "Very few people know about our plans to wipe out the Bloodline Purification Society this time."
Even so, we were still ambushed by the Wax Demon—this means that someone leaked our departure information in advance.
"I need you to infiltrate the target's dream, gather more intelligence, and facilitate my subsequent operations."
Risa pondered for a moment and nodded in agreement: "Okay, but I can't be too far from the target. If I can get the target to drink the hallucinogenic potion, it will greatly reduce my burden."
She took two vials of potion from her person and handed them to Kane. Kane took them and fell into deep thought.
Late at night, Kane snapped out of his daze, carrying a bottle of liquor laced with hallucinogenic liquid.
He walked down the corridor and gently knocked on Sofia's door—
