Chapter 11 The Old Man with the Cane
Chapter 11 The Old Man with the Cane
"You were robbed too?"
"Yeah, my soul cultivation vessel and Xiao Nuo's Stardust Magic Artifact were both stolen. Her Stardust Magic Artifact belonged to the school." Jiang Shaoxu was a little annoyed. She even lost her soul cultivation vessel while eating a meal. This meal was really expensive.
"I can find the thief, but now there is a problem. Even our five senses are not comparable to those of ordinary people, and this thief specifically targets mages. Even senior mages cannot escape his clutches. The other party is very likely a mage."
The question now is whether we can defeat the thief once we find him, and whether it would be better to contact your family or the Magic Association to handle the situation.
Jiang Shaoxu waved his hand confidently and said, "You don't need to worry about that. As long as the thief is found, I can handle it."
Don't believe me?
Jiang Shaoxu was angered by Su Ming's suspicious expression.
"Do you know anything about magic tools?"
"I know." Su Ming nodded. This was common knowledge for magicians. Every magician could find magical tools, which were magical items crafted by blacksmiths. They could be used simply by inputting magic power into the magical tool.
For example, a fire mage cannot use lightning magic, but certain magical artifacts can achieve this effect, and some magical artifacts are even more powerful than magic.
Moreover, there are many types of magical artifacts, including those for attack, defense, flight, and acceleration. There's nothing a magical artifact can't do.
"I have magical artifacts, and they're even demon-slaying artifacts. As long as I input magical energy, I can unleash slashes that even slaves and demons can't withstand."
"How can you input magical energy into magical tools if you can't even cast spells?"
Jiang Shaoxu looked at Su Ming as if he were an idiot and said, "A mage has magical energy in their body the moment they awaken. The reason they can't release magic is just that their star power is not well controlled. As long as a mage is awakened, they can use magical tools. Otherwise, why do you think magical tools are so expensive? They are useful for saving lives."
"Are we really going to use it?" Su Ming was still a little hesitant. He didn't quite trust Jiang Shaoxu and felt like he was going to be tricked. He also didn't know Xiao Qing's exact strength. Strange as it was, strange couldn't be used as a substitute for strength.
If Xiaoqing encounters danger, she can slip away back to the summoning plane, but he can't. Since his life is at stake, he has to be careful.
"Don't worry, there won't be any problems. You just need to lead me to the thief." Jiang Shaoxu sneered inwardly. You still don't believe me? This old lady has so many magical artifacts that you're panicking. Don't even mention that some senior magician has been stolen from.
This group of novice mages are all senior mages; after decades of experience, they are indeed senior mages.
"Is she going with them?" Su Ming decided to trust her and pointed to Bai Zinuo.
"Xiao Nuo won't go, just the two of us. If we encounter danger, I can just throw her off and run away myself."
Su Ming frowned, feeling that Jiang Shaoxu was plotting to trick him.
Jiang Shaoxu spoke with Bai Zinuo, and Bai Zinuo waited for them to return in this private room.
Su Ming followed Xiao Qing's directions and walked all the way there.
After exiting the Marriott Hotel through the main gate, turn right and walk for a while until you arrive at a complex and confusing area.
In theory, there shouldn't be an old town in the center of a city, especially since this is a very old old town. Zhoucheng is just a small third-tier city, and the government has no plans to renovate this old town.
I heard that a highly respected old mage lives here. He has lost his magical abilities due to his age, and it is because of this old mage that the old town has been preserved.
"How is it? Where is he?" Jiang Shaoxu asked. Su Ming hadn't gone in since he arrived, which made her a little anxious.
"Don't rush." Su Ming was a little puzzled. Xiao Qing had shrunk back after arriving here, seemingly unwilling to step into this area.
Is it because of that legendary old monk?
Su Ming tried to communicate with Xiao Qing through telepathy, but despite his best efforts, he couldn't get her to give him directions again. He only started giving directions after agreeing that she could return to the summoning plane on her own in case of danger.
"Follow."
Jiang Shaoxu was almost asleep when Su Ming's shout startled her awake.
Because of comforting Xiaoqing, the sun had already set, turning the old town red.
There are very few people here. Because it's so old, most of the old people have passed away, and young people don't come to live in this godforsaken place anymore. The houses look dilapidated, and although they are cheap, people have died in them.
People in the magical world seem to be particularly prone to believing in ghosts and spirits, and are extremely superstitious about feng shui.
I wouldn't go to a place with bad feng shui, no matter how cheap it is.
Suddenly, Su Ming decided to scare Jiang Shaoxu; her delicate, pretty face would definitely look beautiful when she cried.
"Little Xu'er, have you heard a legend? A legend about this old town?" Su Ming said in a low voice. The sun had completely set, and there were very few streetlights in the old town, so he could barely see her.
The moon was also obscured by dark clouds tonight, making it pitch black.
Tell me about it.
Jiang Shaoxu remained calm. She wanted to find the thief and retrieve the soul-cultivating artifact, not for her father's, which was lost and that was gone. The problem was that the artifact her brother had given her was also in the thief's hands.
This gave her a reason to come and a reason to retrieve the utensils.
"Ahem, let me tell you something. This is what my dad told me. I heard that the lights in the old town go out every night. It's not that they haven't installed new ones. They did install new streetlights here before, but they always broke down after a day or two."
"And it's all dark here, mostly old people, you can't see anyone. When my dad first came here, he saw an old man with a cane who walked without making a sound. If the old man hadn't reminded him, my dad wouldn't have noticed him."
"This wasn't just something my dad said; many middle-aged people experienced it when they were young. The old man's voice was hollow and lifeless, and he walked unsteadily, as if he were already dead."
Su Ming simply didn't know how to describe how terrifying it was, while Jiang Shaoxu didn't react much.
"Oh," Jiang Shaoxu replied listlessly, pointing ahead and asking, "Is this the person you're talking about?"
Upon hearing the sound, Su Ming looked over and saw an even darker shadow walking towards him from the dark road. There was no sound, and the shadow swayed as if it were about to fall down at any moment.
The streetlights suddenly turned on and then quickly went out.
Su Ming's face turned ashen. He saw the appearance of the shadow. It was an old man with a face full of age spots, looking lifeless, and most importantly, he was swaying back and forth with a cane.
There was no sound, no footsteps, no sound of the cane hitting the ground. He was a magician, with senses far beyond those of ordinary people; he couldn't hear anything, meaning the old man hadn't made a sound at all.
Su Ming's face turned somewhat grim. He had thought his father was just boasting about his past experiences, but it turned out to be true.
"Xiao Qing!!"
"Xiao Qing!!"
Su Ming roared inwardly, but Xiao Qing didn't respond. She lay motionless in his arms, just like a real porcelain doll.
Damn, I can't count on this guy.
Su Ming had a sudden inspiration. He moved swiftly, letting Jiang Shaoxu stand in front while he grabbed Jiang Shaoxu's clothes from behind.
What people fear most is the unknown. Su Ming has no one to rely on except Xiao Qing. If it were lightning or fire magic, he could throw a couple of spells to test the waters and not be so afraid. But now he is powerless, only slightly stronger than an ordinary person.
"Little Xu'er, it's you."
The old man's voice was hollow and devoid of any emotion. Su Ming was slightly taken aback. Xiao Xu?
Does this old man know Jiang Shaoxu?
"Grandpa Liu, it's been a long time." Jiang Shaoxu greeted him politely, solemnly and seriously, completely different from his usual style.
Xiao Xu, Grandpa Liu.
Su Ming coughed lightly twice, released his grip on Jiang Shaoxu's clothes, and stood side by side with Jiang Shaoxu.
"Little boyfriend?" Grandpa Liu's voice was emotionless, but one could still sense the doubt in it.
Jiang Shaoxu shook her head and said, "No, they're just classmates from school."
"My ex-boyfriend," Su Ming said seriously after thinking for a moment.
Jiang Shaoxu patted Su Ming in exasperation, "What are you saying in front of the old man?"
Su Ming felt a little wronged; after all, he was her ex-boyfriend.
"Hehe, so it's your ex-boyfriend. My memory's a bit fuzzy, Xu'er. Do you break up with your boyfriends after you get new ones?"
Jiang Shaoxu blushed slightly, pursed her lips and remained silent, but Su Ming couldn't see it because of the lack of light.
Grandpa Liu sighed in annoyance, "No, no, why should an old man like me meddle in the affairs of young people?"
As Grandpa Liu approached, the dark clouds in the sky dissipated somewhat, and Su Ming's body trembled as he saw the old man's face.
The old man had no pupils; his eye sockets were completely black. He stared at Su Ming, as if he could see Su Ming's face.
